A far reaching conversation regarding fitness both near and far is the age old question do i stretch before or after I work out? Whats the point anyways? The answer to this question is not as simple as confirming nod yes or contraindicating no. Stretching depends of the various objectives of the practitioner. What the heck does that mean? That means one man’s stretch, another man’s injury. Here are some things to consider. Are you stretching to warm up or for flexibility? Whats is the nature of the physical activity? How mobile are you to begin with? Are there other limiting factors that stretching could exacerbate or improve upon? To answer this question whiter to stretch or no conclusively with an affirmative in any regard would be half hazard. If the notion of stretching is still beyond your reach, think of it this way, stretching is a practice used as a preventative to injuries, however if executed improperly at the wrong time, in the wrong place or position, one could very well find themselves stuck in a pickle.

I’ve been a trainer for a number of years. I train a number of clients of various fitness levels, whose fitness goals sharply contrast each other. Out of my fifteen years of training I’ve never been presumptuous in the attempt to train all my clients the same. Nor are the specialized designs of their fitness programs.

As a fitness professional, it is my duty to carefully assess all of my clients case by case. The details of my clients physical goals, needs and limitations, are assessed in depth and serve as a critical component to how efficiently and rapidly my clients progress. I do this to establish the most effective course of action to assist my clients in the process of working towards helping them achieve their fitness goals, while in addition to enhancing the quality of their lives.

It’s no surprise that the fitness industry is saturated with health, fitness professionals and trainers private or other. What separates the good trainers from the bad trainers? What should one look for when seeking or in consideration of enlisting the guidance of a fitness professional or trainer? The criteria are many fold ranging in gender, experience, style of training, aesthetic appearance, physical ability or athletic history, and yes even personalities. All of which when you get down to it means very little when it comes to degree of experience, depth of knowledge and professionalism. Not to mention comfort level. Here are some very important key points that may help. Start with these 10 questions and your well are your way to finding the best trainer for the job.

Is the gender of the trainer sought after important ? Which is preferred male or female?

Does sexual orientation matter? Yes! I need to mention this, because again we are dealing with personalities types of people and of course, without saying we all have preferences.

Would you choose a trainer who, with out intentionally being rude, does not appear to adhere to the advisement of their own expertise?

Has the tenure of the trainers training experience been over 2 years? Usually the first year of a trainers experience is a transitional period in which confidence, working with a broad spectrum of clients and depth of knowledge is limited or should I say still under the developmental stage.

Does the style, philosophy or personality of the trainer you seek accommodate or compliment your life style, physical activity or personality? Some trainers may be too extreme in their approach and other trainers more holistic or less in your face, if you will.

Does the trainer have credentials or references they are willing to submit to you for helping you to make an informed decision? If no, there may be justifiable cause to question the trainers level of experience.

Are the credentials and professional certificates of the trainer in question up to date? If not, this is a clearer sign that the trainer is unorganized or not fully invested in the nature or importance of their profession. This could pose unforeseen conflicts later on.

What times of day are best for you to train? Knowing your schedule and the availability of the trainer will help to facilitate the process of establishing some specific days and times for training. This is to assure the likely hood of adhering to a regular fitness regime long term and hold the client accountable for the overall outcomes or objective for having a trainer.

Does anyone you know have a trainer? Ask them for their personal experiences or opinion. This will help to give you a clearer perspective and much more likely to pair you with a trainer who possesses all the qualities I have mentioned.

If it has conclusively been decided that you are a candidate for training and you are ready to make a commitment to the endeavor of achieving your fitness goals, what ever they may be, you’re well on you way to finding the trainer right for you.
